The next morning, Andrea was eating two fried eggs, a tiny pineapple pastry, and some orange juice. Yooko was eating three fried eggs, yogurt, beefsteak with onions, freshly chopped pico de gallo, fresh tortillas, and some orange juice. Masawa was eating the same thing as Yooko. Masawa went to the kitchen, and said, “Doña Gabriela, I would like to have twenty hard-boiled eggs and a lot of tortillas and pastries if it isn’t too much to ask, please.”

Doña Gabriela said, “Of course not, I will have them ready soon.”

The countess asked, “Your hard work makes you eat well, I see.” She looked at Yooko, and asked, “What about you, do you want the same thing?”

Yooko said, “Not today. You know, Masawa has always had a greater appetite than me, and he has been working harder these past few days.

Andrea looked at them, and said, “I need you to investigate when they are going to repair the collapsed tunnel. I know the architect who is the head of the construction project will let me know, but I am sure you can find out faster than that.”

Yooko said, “Masawa and I will find out for you.” After they ate, they left.

Meanwhile, Andrea went to her stable and saw the men working in it. Some were cleaning it. Others fed the cows and horses, and others helped a cow deliver her calf. Most of the men stopped what they were doing to look at Andrea attentively, except the two workers who were with the pregnant cow. The countess looked around and went to speak with the two tall, strong, handsome, dark-skinned young gentlemen who were helping deliver the baby calf. She looked at both of them, and asked, “What are your names, gentlemen?”

The cow was lying down. They shifted their attention from the cow to Andrea. One said, “I am Benito.”

The other one said, “And I am Esteban.”

She asked, “Which one of you gentleman would like to come with me to ride my horse? I do not want to go alone.” Benito, looking at Esteban, asked, “Do you want to go?”

Esteban replied, “I want to finish helping Perla deliver her calf.”

With a serious expression Benito said, “Then I’ll go.”

Esteban said, “Go ahead.”

Benito grabbed his hat from a pile of straw, put it on, looked at Andrea, and said, “I am ready, ma’am.”

Andrea looked at him, and said, “Find us two horses for the ride.” He brought the two horses and helped her get on one. He mounted the other and they left. He let her lead the way.

After a few minutes of riding their horses in the wild, Andrea brought her horse to a halt. Benito asked, “Is there something wrong, ma’am?”

“I wish to speak to you.”

“What do you want to talk about?”

“Let’s sit down to rest and chat for a little while,” she said.

Benito agreed by nodding his head and got off his horse. Then, he walked to her and offered his arms. She accepted his help to get off her horse. He took his outer shirt off and put it over a big rock.
